Video Portal Veoh Retains Equity Partners CRB To Explore Sale, Other Strategic Options

The owners of Veoh, a video portal that claims to have millions of users worldwide, has said it has enlisted the help of Equity Partners CRB to explore strategic options for the company, including a sale. "The company intends to focus solely on commercialization of its proprietary social video offerings," owners Qlipso said in a statement (embedded below).?The move is a sign that even with large audiences (but perhaps not large enough) video portals are facing some challenges monetizing under their existing, ad-based business models. And it may be a further sign that Veoh specifically has faced challenges in growth following lawsuits from big media, a bankruptcy in 2010, and its sale to Qlipso shortly after. Veoh, which focuses on premium rather than user-generated content, says it currently has 3 million pieces of content in its catalog, along with revenue-sharing partnerships with ?TV, cable, music and other brands worldwide. The company had raised some $80 million from investors that include Intel Capital and Michael Eisner.

Serendipitous science gets the Golden Goose

Scientists who came up with laser technology, glow-in-the-dark proteins and coral-inspired bone grafts received the first-ever Golden Goose Awards today on Capitol Hill, as part of a campaign to counter the fuss over seemingly silly science.

Believe it or not, all those innovations came from federally funded research projects that were once dismissed as too arcane or unworkable to produce practical applications. And that's the point: It's easy to mock scientists who teach robots to fold laundry or put shrimp on underwater treadmills. But sometimes it's the ridiculous research that yields a big payoff.

"We should honor, not mock, scientists," U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., said in a news release. "Like the fabled golden goose, today's awardees gave unexpected gifts to mankind. Budget cutbacks must be made, but science should be spared."


It was Cooper who came up with the idea behind the Golden Goose Awards as a?counterbalance to?the negative stereotype often?attached to odd or obscure studies. Back in the 1970s, Sen. William Proxmire, D-Wis., created the Golden Fleece Awards to ridicule federally funded projects that he thought were wasteful. His "winners" included NASA, which sought $2 million to fund a radio-based search for extraterrestrial intelligence; and the National Science Foundation, for spending $84,000 on relationship research.

The tradition has continued in recent times, in the form of congressional reports that are critical of NSF spending. For what it's worth, the American Association for the Advancement of Science estimates?that total federal spending on research and development has been staying around the level of 11 to 13 percent of overall discretionary spending for more than 30 years.?

The Golden Goose Awards are the result of Cooper's collaboration with other lawmakers, Republicans and Democrats, as well as with the AAAS and other science-minded organizations. The program's stated purpose is "to demonstrate the human and economic benefits of federally funded research by highlighting examples of seemingly obscure or unusual studies that have led to major breakthroughs and have had a significant impact on society."

The eight Golden Goose recipients were announced over the weekend. Here's the list:

  • Charles Townes,?a physicist who was told early in his career not to waste resources on an obscure technique for amplifying waves of radiation into a continuous stream. His research in the 1950s led to the invention of laser technology, which was initially seen as a "solution looking for a problem." Today, of course, lasers are essential for applications ranging from DVD players and grocery-store scanners to surgery, military weapons and nuclear fusion experiments. Townes' work earned him a Nobel Prize in 1964.
  • Eugene White, Rodney White, Della Roy and the late Jon Weber, who spent way too much time studying the microscopic structure of tropical coral. They eventually figured out that the structure could be adapted to create a type of ceramic scaffolding that's commonly used today in bone grafts and prosthetic eyes.
  • Martin Chalfie, Roger Tsien, and Osamu Shimomura, whose research focused on the nervous systems of jellyfish. In the 1960s, Shimomura extracted a substance known as Green Fluorescent Protein, or GFP, that made certain jellyfish glow under ultraviolet light. Chalfie and Tsien later found ways to use GFP and similar proteins as cellular markers in a variety of organisms. The discoveries earned the trio a Nobel Prize?in 2008. In its Nobel citation, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said glow-in-the-dark proteins have become "a guiding star for biochemists, biologists, medical scientists and other researchers."

AAAS CEO Alan Leshner said the stories behind the awards demonstrated that "the unexpected benefits of basic research have been huge."?What do you think? First dengue vaccine trial disappoints

Shots protect against three virus subtypes, but not fourth

A long-awaited first test of a vaccine against dengue fever has failed to consistently prevent the viral disease in children, researchers report online September 11 in the Lancet. The mixed results have left scientists wondering how one form of the virus dodged what looked like a potent immunization regimen.

The shaky showing in Thai children won?t send scientists back to the drawing board, since the vaccine is already being tested extensively elsewhere. Officials at vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur even point out that the vaccine engendered respectable defense, protecting against three of the four viral subtypes of dengue in 61 to 90 percent of vaccinated children.

But the vaccine failed to fend off one subtype of dengue, called dengue serotype 2. That subtype is common in the region of Thailand where the trial was conducted. What?s more, the specific version of the dengue subtype 2 in that area turned out to be particularly aggressive, says study coauthor Nadia Tornieporth, a physician and head of global clinical research at Sanofi Pasteur U.S. headquarters in Swiftwater, Pa.

?This trial is a cautionary tale for investigators designing future dengue vaccine trials,? says Scott Halstead, a physician at the International Vaccine Institute in Seoul, Korea, writing in the same issue of Lancet. Most of the children in the study had previous exposure to a dengue subtype or a related virus, a situation that makes it difficult to establish the effectiveness of the new vaccine, he says.

According to the World Health Organization, dengue affects 50 million to 100 million people globally each year, with 500,000 needing hospitalization.

To elicit an immune reaction, the vaccine uses a yellow fever vaccine as a platform for ferrying viral proteins from the four dengue subtypes. The vaccine had previously generated ample neutralizing antibodies in people, Halstead says. The version of dengue serotype 2 virus circulating in Thailand might have evaded these antibodies, he suggests, or the vaccine might have failed to generate balanced immune responses to all four subtypes of dengue.

The researchers enrolled 4,002 children ages 4 to 11 in the study. The kids were randomly assigned to get three shots spaced over one year ? either three doses of the dengue vaccine or one shot of a rabies vaccine and two placebo shots. In all, 2,452 children got three shots and full follow-up tests, while 1,221 got the control shots.

The researchers diagnosed 134 dengue infections in all children in the study over two years. Dengue serotype 2 caused three-fifths of the infections. ?We were surprised when we saw there was no protection against this particular dengue serotype,? Tornieporth says.

Overall, 2.8 percent of the vaccinated children and 4.4 percent of the controls came down with dengue fever, a difference too small to establish a benefit. Five children contracted severe dengue ? two who got the vaccine and three controls ? but all recovered fully.

Questions arising from these mixed results will probably be answered in 2014 when Sanofi Pasteur releases findings from an ongoing trial of the same vaccine in more than 30,000 children and teenagers in 10 countries, Tornieporth says.

Apple has a tradition of timing FCC filings for new wireless mobile devices so that they appear just as soon as they've been announced, and it's not about to let up now. We've got a trifecta of approvals on the way for 2012 that start with the iPhone 5. What's hard to miss is the absurd number of cellular bands at work: as Apple had to make separate iPhone 5 models to cover every LTE carrier it supports, on top of the usual alphabet soups for CDMA and GSM, the filing combining the two devices is one of the largest we've seen to date. The addition of 5GHz WiFi support only compounds the situation.

A pair of iPods also made their appearances today, and they've been given the regulatory once-over as well. The iPod touch has the 5GHz WiFi band included and isn't special by itself, but the new iPod nano is noteworthy simply for showing up at all -- the inclusion of Bluetooth means a spin past the testing facility in addition to some wireless audio. We're still digging to see if the iPhone or new iPods have any surprises, although you can have a first-hand look through the source links.
