Facebook has launched its Explore London 2012 page today, providing the public with an insight into athletes, national teams and specific sports in the upcoming Summer Olympic Games.
The world?s 900 million Facebook users are able to ?like? pages and receive updates from individual Olympic athletes, teams or sports. The pages also allow for interaction between the public and the sports stars, enabling the fans to cheer on their favourite competitors.
Facebook VP and Managing Director EMEA Joanna Shields believes the pages provide an avenue for every Olympic story ?to be heard?.
?On Facebook, all athletes can have an audience, and every fan can track how their heroes are doing, support them, encourage them, and share their stories with the world,? Shields said.
The Facebook page includes links to the pages of the Australian Olympic Team and Aussie diver Matthew Mitcham and swimmer Eamon Sullivan, plus a number of international starts such as American basketball stars LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Kobe Bryant, sprinting record holder Usain Bolt, swimmer Michael Phelps and tennis players Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
According to IOC Director of Communications Mark Adams, ?social media brings a new dimension to the Games.
?The Olympics has been connecting fans with memorable sporting events and moments for more than a century, first in the stadiums, then through television and now on social media,? Adams said. ?It makes sense to give fans the best experience we can and these will be the first truly ?social? Games.?
