Montana police say Alvin Barnett, the three-year-old B.C. boy allegedly kidnapped by his father from the Elk Valley region of the Interior Thursday afternoon, has been found safe.
Shortly after 7 a.m., police in Missoula, MT, located about 300 kilometres southeast of the border, confirmed the boy had been found alive and safe, but had no further details. There is no word yet on whether his father has been arrested.
The RCMP in B.C. sent out a bulletin shortly before 7 a.m. saying the Amber Alert had been cancelled but with no details.
Earlier Friday, Sgt. Collin Rose with the police in Missoula said authorities received a tip that the boy may have been at a local shop called the Sweetheart Bakery between 3 and 6 p.m. Thursday. Missoula is located
Authorities believe that Barnett and his father Robert Barnett crossed the border into Eureka, Montana at around 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
An Amber Alert was issued earlier by B.C. RCMP alleging that Robert Barnett, 39, was heading south on Highway 93 with his son, Alvin, in a 2002 blue Subaru Outback with the licence plate number 347SBL.
Barnett, a Caucasian man about 1.65 m tall (5'5"), may be wearing a dark sweater, blue jeans and runners. He has green eyes, a scar above his right eyebrow, reddish blonde hair and may be unshaven. Alvin may be wearing a red shirt and blue jeans.
Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, senior media relations officer, South East District, said that police at 3:15 p.m. received the report of a parental abduction after a supervised visit between Barnett and his son.
Moskaluk said the two left Barnett's hotel room and that an investigation has revealed that the two later crossed into the U.S.
"Elk Valley RCMP are currently working in conjunction with law enforcement authorities in Montana in attempts to locate Barnett and his son," Moskaluk said.
