Some 2.7 billion years ago in what is now Omdraaisvlei farm near Prieska, South Africa, a brief storm dropped mild rain on a new layer of ash laid down by a recent volcanic eruption (not unlike ash from the 2010 Eyjafjallaj?kull eruption in Iceland) forming tiny craters. Additional ash subsequently buried the craters and, over eons, hardened to become rock known as tuff. Closer to the present, other rainstorms eroded the overlying tuff, exposing a fossil record of raindrops from the Archean eon, and may now have revealed the density of early Earth's atmosphere.

By scanning with lasers the craters created by ancient raindrops?and comparing the indentations with those made by water drops sprinkled onto a layer of similar ash today?physicist Sanjoy Som of the University of Washington in Seattle and his colleagues have derived a measurement of the pressure exerted by the primitive atmosphere. The scientists report in Nature on March 29 that the ancient air could not have been much denser than the present atmosphere?and, in fact, may have been much less so. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

"Air pressure 2.7 billion years ago was at most twice present levels, and more likely no higher than at present," Som explains. The key to that determination is raindrop size. Back in 1851 pioneering geologist Charles Lyell?suggested that measuring the fossilized indentations of raindrops might reveal details about the ancient atmosphere. These mini-craters are formed based on the size and speed of ancient raindrops.?Because the atmosphere drags on each drop, constraining the speed of its descent based on its size, if one could determine an ancient raindrop's size, one could determine how thick the atmosphere likely was.

The largest raindrop ever measured in modern times was 6.8 millimeters around, Som notes, which is also the theoretical limit; larger raindrops break apart. Because the laws of physics were likely the same in the distant past, this suggests that raindrops were no bigger in the Archean and puts an upper limit how big the ancient drops could have been. Plus, such raindrops are exceedingly rare in modern storms?and tend to fall in powerful downpours, which in the Archean would have been more likely to have washed ash away rather than form craters that could be fossilized.

To determine the size of the ancient droplets, Som and his colleagues compared the fossilized imprints with the craters that formed when they released various-size droplets from 27 meters above similar ash taken from the 2010 Eyjafjallaj?kull eruption in Iceland as well as from Hawaii. They then turned these modern craters to "rock" "using hair spray and low-viscosity liquid urethane plastic." Based on the comparisons, they concluded that the size of ancient droplets fell in the range of 3.8 to 5.3 millimeters.

Plugging those numbers into the mathematical relationship between raindrop size, speed and atmospheric density suggests that the early Earth's atmosphere exerted at most twice as much pressure as the present day atmosphere?assuming raindrops of the maximum size and speed created the craters?and more likely was roughly the same or as little as half present pressure.

A better understanding of the properties of Archean Earth's atmosphere may help explain what's known as the "faint young sun" paradox. Billions of years ago, the sun emitted less radiation, roughly 85 percent of its present output, and therefore heated the planet less. Yet, the fossil records suggest abundant liquid water and other signs of a warm, "clement" climate, as Som and colleagues noted in the analysis. The simplest explanation for this is that Earth simply boasted an atmosphere thick with greenhouse gases. "The sky was probably hazy," from the gases, Som says, in addition to being ruled by a fainter sun that passed across the sky more quickly because Earth rotated faster then. Plus, the atmosphere lacked a significant quantity of oxygen (because there were no plants), potentially lightening the atmospheric pressure. "Earth back then looked nothing like it does today."

Obama Care is Not Health Insurance | RedState

Nobody disagrees with the basic premise that everyone should be protected in case of serious illness or injury with appropriate insurance. But the concept of an individual mandate does nothing ? not only does it not help with that problem of encouraging everyone to carry coverage, it confuses the entire idea of what ?health insurance? is or is supposed to be so that it affirmatively discourages or reduces the likelihood that people will have insurance. I propose that the concept of health insurance should only really be related to major medical situations.

The individual mandate is both unconstitutional and ineffective because it leads to a poor allocation of resources. In order to understand why, it requires an understanding between the difference of real health ?insurance? and what currently counts as health insurance (a broad medical coverage plan).

Insurance, by definition, is a payment of a premium to cover the very unlikely event that would result in high economic consequences. Therefore, it has the effect of relatively low premiums to protect against that economic possibility.

In contrast, what counts as medical insurance in this country is a small portion of real insurance, but is largely pre-paid medical care: you pay your monthly premium which you get back every time you go to the doctor because you?ve already contributed x so many dollars a month which covers the doctors? fees (minus a ?co-pay? or ?deductible?). It?s not an efficient practice, however, nor a cost-effective one. It gives the false impression that going to the doctor is cheap, when in reality, you?ve already paid in advance for doctor visits ? that you may or may not have.

This is in contrast to other types of true insurance. I submit it is necessary to remodel the health insurance system after other insurance sectors ? such as life, fire, or home insurance. For instance, it is both accepted and reasonable that you will pay more for life insurance at the age of sixty than at twenty-five. The reason for this practice is the understanding that the risk is higher.

Likewise, people buy fire insurance because the economic loss is from a fire is extraordinarily great and the cost for coverage is relatively low. But even with fire insurance, you pay more if you home is made of wood and not brick, and if you live farther from a fire station than closer ? that is the matter of risk.

Everyone should have routine doctor visits. If everyone paid for those out-of-pocket, it would be more economically viable, because one would only be paying for what he needed ? and would probably result in more healthy citizens who have an economic incentive to take better care of themselves. ?Instead, the government intentionally combines and obfuscates the meaning and definition of insurance to include medical coverage or routine costs. The only people who truly need that are the same people who can?t afford anything ? and should be treated like those who can?t afford routine food.

You don?t need insurance to go to a doctor. That is welfare. For the average person who pays 15-20K a year of medical coverage, a very large percentage of the cost is not insurance ? it?s the prepaid care for a larger pool of people. Therefore, individuals are really overpaying when it is set up this way because the real insurance part is intentionally combined with health care so you can hide the cost of those with higher risks, i.e the cost is buried within premiums.

The term ?individual mandate? is intentionally confusing. The individual mandate ? as the administration would describe it ? is a requirement that everyone buy their own health insurance. The basic concept of everyone having their own health insurance is not, in and of itself, terrible ??if?health insurance were actually insurance in the same way life or fire insurance are. Obama Care, however, is not ?and therefore the individual mandate is not a mandate to buy health insurance as we?ve been told ? it?s a mandate for universal and pre-paid medical care.

Since people of different ages, medical conditions, pre-existing situations, etc have different anticipated costs, the purpose of an individual mandate has nothing to do with getting people to buy their own insurance. It is the forcing of individuals to buy into a system that makes people pay for medical treatments that are not theirs, support welfare, and overpay for services in order to create a coverage that is similar for all person. That is legal plunder and anti free-market. The health care industry would best serve our citizens if Obama Care and the individual mandate was rescinded and if it restructured health insurance as a ?true insurance?.

Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox are being accused of assaulting a photographer in what is being called a beach brawl. The actor could find himself in some serious trouble if these allegations are true. ? Photographer Delbert Shaw is claiming that while he was taking pictures of a bikini clad Fox on the beach both Megan and Brian began objecting with verbal threats. The event allegedly occurred while the couple was vacationing in Hawaii last December. According to the New York Daily News a lawyer for Shaw has said that the altercation turned violent when Fox asked her hubby if he was going to let the photog get way with taking pics of her. After that the former 90210 star allegedly tackled Delbert and threw his iPhone into the ocean outside the Four Seasons. Shaw is claiming that he sustained injuries when Brain threw him to the ground and tossed him around including some bruising and a black eye. The lawsuit was officially filed today and Delbert is asking for an unspecified amount of damages. Apparently TMZ has photos of Green lunging at Shaw, which could help his case. Student shot to death in Mississippi St. dorm

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- A student was shot to death at a Mississippi State University residence hall late Saturday night, authorities said, adding that three suspects remained at large.

The shooting was reported in an alert on the school's website at 10:37 p.m., and the victim was confirmed dead in an alert at 11:17 p.m.

Authorities described the suspects as three males who fled the hall in a blue late-model Crown Victoria car.

There were no immediate reports of further injuries and the university is operating on "emergency" status, officials said.

People without children often have a misconception about how things will be when they have their own on Washington DC New Years.? Their ideas change once the kids are born.

I remember being at a nice restaurant on washington dc new years with my fiance.? There were children on the other side of the restaurant, and we had to listen to one of them scream the whole time we ate.? I was actually pregnant at the time.? We both swore we would never ruin any one else's romantic dinner with a screaming child.? Better yet, our children would never scream in a restaurant at all.? Once we actually experienced wanting to go out for the first time in months with no available sitter, we realized sometimes parents just suck it up and go with the kids anyway.

Also, remember those days before your kids were born when all you knew was how it felt to have so much free time, and you just knew how perfectly you would raise your kids once it was time?? Remember how quickly all of those ideas flew out the window right when the baby was born?? So, the next time someone without Washington DC New Years children wants to give you advice about how you parent, tell them that you used to think the same way.? It is easy for someone without children to point out what they think you are doing wrong because they have never had their own.

Before I had kids, I wondered why other parents were so obsessed with sharing every little thing their child did, said, ate, learned, accomplished, etc.? Now that I am a washington d.c.

new years' mother, I understand what it is like to be proud of every single milestone and moment, no matter how "small" it is.

Not every one has kids.? Everyone has a general idea of how to parent well.? Healthy foods, balanced discipline, lots of love, good home, etc.? However, until you have Washington DC New Years children of your own, do not judge other parents.? It is easy to say what you will do when you do not have kids or before you become a parent, but putting your ideas into practice is harder than it seems.

Santorum looks for rebound in Louisiana

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rick Santorum looked for a win in Louisiana's primary Saturday to boost his Republican presidential campaign while front-runner Mitt Romney braced for an expected loss.

No matter who wins the state, the overall trajectory of the fight for the party's nomination was unlikely to change. Santorum still dramatically lags in the hunt for delegates to the GOP's summertime nominating convention, and Romney remains the prohibitive favorite to become the nominee.

Even so, Santorum made clear he would press on beyond Louisiana and spent Saturday campaigning in next-up Wisconsin, which votes April 3 and represents one of his last chances to beat Romney in a Midwestern state.

"Stand for your principles. Don't compromise. Don't sell America short," Santorum implored Wisconsin voters in Milwaukee, telling them that he expected their state to be "the turning point in this race."

In an unmistakable jab at Romney, Santorum added: "Don't make the mistake that Republicans made in 1976. Don't nominate the moderate. When you do, we lose." It was a reference to Ronald Reagan losing the 1976 Republican nomination to incumbent President Gerald Ford, and Democrat Jimmy Carter winning the White House.

Exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks showed that the bad economy was the top issue for Louisiana voters, and most were gloomy about prospects for a recovery, saying they felt the economy was getting worse instead of better. While some national surveys suggest Americans are feeling optimistic about economic improvement, just one in eight Republican primary voters said they thought a recovery was underway.

Beating President Barack Obama in the fall was the most important consideration for about four of every ten Louisiana voters.

The former Pennsylvania senator badly needed a rebound after a decisive Illinois loss to Romney earlier in the week that moved party stalwarts to rally around the former Massachusetts governor. Many urged Santorum and fellow candidate former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to drop out of the race.

Both refused, and campaigned aggressively in Louisiana in hopes that a victory there would justify them continuing their bids despite Republican worries that the drawn-out nomination fight could hurt the party's chances this fall against President Barack Obama. The Democratic incumbent faces no serious primary challenge and his re-election campaign already is well under way.

Romney barely campaigned in Louisiana, though his allies spent on TV ads there. Instead, Romney was looking past the results and toward the general election.

"I want the vote of the people of Louisiana so we can consolidate our lead," Romney said Friday while campaigning in Shreveport. He told supporters his campaign wants to focus on "raising the money and building the team to defeat someone that needs to be out of office in 2012, and that's Barack Obama."

Romney is far ahead in the delegate count and on pace to reach the necessary 1,144 delegates before the party's convention in August.

After the Illinois primary March 20, Romney had 563 delegates, according to an Associated Press tally. Santorum had 263, while Gingrich trailed with 135. Texas Rep. Ron Paul had 50.

Santorum looked to add another Southern state to his win column after beating Romney in Alabama and Mississippi, raising questions about Romney's ability to connect with the party's conservative base, particularly in its Southern heart.

In the run up to Saturday, Santorum found himself on the defensive after suggesting he'd prefer a second term for Obama over a Romney presidency. Santorum was all but forced to walk back those comments, saying less than 24 hours before Louisiana polls opened that "over my dead body would I vote for Barack Obama."

Romney also faced trouble this week when a top aide compared the switch from a primary to a general election campaign to an Etch A Sketch toy, suggesting earlier campaign positions could be easily wiped away. Most Louisiana voters said they weren't concerned with the comment, with only about one in five in exit polls calling this week's Etch A Sketch controversy an important factor in their vote.

Louisiana's complicated delegate rules meant that Santorum could walk away with a handful of delegates even if he won the state. That's because even though there were 20 delegates at stake Saturday, they are awarded proportionally to the candidates who receive more than 25 percent of the vote.

Most states divide all the available delegates among the candidates who meet the minimum threshold. Louisiana's system is strictly proportional, with any leftover delegates designated as uncommitted, meaning they will be fought for at the state convention.

None of the candidates remained in the state on Saturday, with Santorum and Gingrich moving on to Pennsylvania. Santorum also campaigned in Wisconsin. Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul had no public events Saturday.

Like Santorum, Gingrich showed no inclination to leave the race ahead of the August convention. "There's no incentive to get out as long as there's an opportunity to be there if it gets unlocked," Gingrich told reporters after delivering a Saturday speech to the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference, the state's largest annual gathering of conservatives.

The next key fight comes Tuesday in Wisconsin. Romney's campaign is airing TV ads in the state, and his super PAC allies have plowed more than $2 million into TV advertising there.

Also voting April 3 are Maryland and the District of Columbia. There are 95 delegates combined at stake in the three contests.

Santorum is not on the ballot in Washington, D.C., but is ahead in opinion polls in Maryland.
